Angelle’s Story: The GoodWork Programme

Angelle (right) alongside another GoodWork intern working at Wild.

We recently caught up with Angelle, who completed the GoodWork programme earlier this year. Through GoodWork, she secured an internship with our partners at Wild (and she’s since become a permanent member of the team!). Here, she shares her story about her time on the GoodWork programme.

Where were you before you came across GoodWork?

I was looking for jobs, opportunities, and training schemes in marketing. I applied to many, had a few interviews, but nothing successful. Then I came across GoodWork. I liked the application process because it was simpler than others I’d come across and emphasised not needing to have experience, which was comforting. I applied without expecting much since I was applying for everything at the time, but I was really pleased to get accepted.

What happened next?

After I got the email saying I'd been accepted, I had a discussion with Felicity (CEO & Founder of GoodWork) about my career goals. She put me forward for a performance marketing role at Wild, and things moved fast from there. Within a week, I was preparing for an interview, and shortly after, I got an offer for an internship. I started my placement two weeks later and am still there over a year later.

How did the GoodWork programme support you through your internship?

The ongoing support from the GoodWork team was really helpful, whether it was through in-person employment skills training or one-to-ones with the GoodWork team. Just knowing that I could use them as a sounding board was reassuring. The rapport built throughout the programme made it easy to ask for advice or guidance.

As for specific employment skills they supported with, I took a lot away from the session about giving and receiving feedback. The professional communication session also stood out, helping me understand how to communicate clearly in the workplace, even around small things, and how critical it is.

What are you most proud of during your internship?

I’m most proud of my resilience — consistently showing up for myself every day, staying positive, and holding myself accountable. Meeting deadlines, staying committed to tasks, and just making sure I contributed in workshops, sessions with my mentor, and in the workplace.

What do you wish employers knew about young people like you?

There’s a lot of untapped potential and talent in young people, and it can only be fulfilled if we're given the right opportunities in the right environments. Employers should focus less on past experience or degrees, especially for entry-level roles, and more on nurturing that potential. Something employers can do to support young people like me starting out in our careers is have a clear path or roadmap for career development, and personalised learning and training opportunities to help us get there. This helps create the sense of a secure future.

What has been the overall impact of the GoodWork programme on you?

The programme instilled confidence in me and provided tools and reassurance that I'd be okay once I entered the workforce. The programme prepared me to be capable and proficient in my role and to pursue the career I wanted to.

What would you say to other young people thinking of applying for the programme?

Apply! There aren’t many programmes like this that take such a personalised approach. GoodWork offers unmatched support. They take a holistic approach and really care about young people and their needs. You’ll never know where you end up!

Applications to the GoodWork Programme are open until Monday 9 December 2024. Find out more and apply here.
